Advantages of POSS compared to VHP or HVP systems.

Superior Diffusion of POSS “Super-micellar Fog” ( 3 micron droplets )

As the POSS fog is such small and accurate droplet size ( average 3 microns droplet diameter with very small size distribution around the 3 microns ) and roughly the same weight of the surrounding air, then dispersion of the fog is highly effective even in complex geometry spaces. This is aided by strong Brownian motion which acts at random on the small droplets to further disperse them. Again, due to the small accurate droplets size, evaporation of the droplets is rapid which results in the quick attainment of an evenly dispersed and consistent vapour in all areas of the space. This also means that, unlike these competitor systems, no additional air movement equipment like external air fans is required. The hot vapour produced by the competitors also tends to rise to the top of the space, due to its higher temperature than the surrounding air, and needs additional strong air movement to be created to disperse it.

POSS can work at any initial Room RH up to 70%RH.

Competitive systems require that the Initial RH in the space be less than 30 or 35%. This usually involves a phase of air pre-conditioning where the air must be de-humidified the below these levels. This phase can take a considerable time depending on the HVAC system or may even need the use of supplementary de-humidification equipment, either as a stand-alone unit or as a built-in option in the competitive vapour generator equipment. With POSS the fog/vapour diffusion can start immediately thus saving considerable time and avoiding additional Room closure and downtime etc.

POSS uses lower concentration non-hazardous disinfectant solution.

Competitive Vapour phase systems utilise hydrogen peroxide solutions of 35% and upwards, and even as high as 59% hydrogen peroxide. These are highly hazardous and are categorised as DOT Class 8 Hazardous materials for transportation and storage and handling. They cannot be shipped by air, so transportation is expensive and lengthy. POSS uses low concentration hydrogen peroxide solutions of 7.4% concentration which can be transported by air and is easily stored and handled with appropriate precautions.

POSS operates at substantially lower H2O2 vapour concentrations.

VHP/HVP systems typically operate at around 700-900ppm of hydrogen peroxide vapour in the air. This is also maintained at this level throughout the entire Contact Time when the vapour is killing the microorganisms, by constantly topping up the diffusion of the vapour, as this high level is needed throughout the time due to the mechanism of killing being only dependant upon the H2O2 vapour. This high level of H2O2 vapour is not only more costly but will inevitably contribute to a greater risk of any corrosion or materials incompatibility with the materials of construction and equipment within the cleanroom. In contrast, POSS operates at an initial dosage of around 120ppm of H2O2 vapour, as the Water vapour introduced with the H2O2 vapour has a synergistic effect on the biological kill rates, so comparable levels of 6log bacterial spore deactivation can be attained at these lower levels. However, also the diffusion of disinfectant is stopped at the beginning of the Contact Time, with no further additions during this period. As a result, the concentration of H2O2 in the air will drop over the Contact Time to much lower levels and will be approx. 20-50ppm at the end of the Contact time depending on cycle times chosen. This will reduce further any potential for materials incompatibility. The built in control system of the POSS system to manage RH further ensures that a max RH of 90% is not exceeded and so any condensation is avoided.

POSS Cycle times are substantially lower.

Due to the absence of an initial Air Pre-conditioning step, and also due to a lower concentration of H2O2 to be disposed of at the end of the Contact time, meaning that it can be directly ventilated to the HVAC exhaust ( a total of 10-12 Room air changes will lower the residual H2O2 vapour to below 1ppm which is the Permissible Exposure Limit ) the total Decontamination Cycle time is substantially lower. Often less than 40-50% of the time for a competitive VHP/HPV cycle 2-3 hours versus 6-8 hours typically for a large cleanroom ). The use of POSS also avoids the need for any catalytic degradation steps for the residual H2O2 as used by the VHP/HVP systems which need to lower the 700-900ppm to a manageable level. This all adds additional cycle time which means POSS can offer the possible to get the cleanroom back in service quicker, or less equipment downtime in isolators etc.

POSS fog can be piped from the unit into Isolators, Passboxes, Gloveboxes etc.

POSS is the only fog-based technology which can be piped from the POSS machine positioned outside the space , into the space to be decontaminated. Whilst this is possible also with VHP/HVP systems, POSS offers this strong advantage coupled with all the other key advantages detailed in this document. This means that a POSS machine can be placed outside of a cleanroom in which space is at a premium due to large amounts of equipment and the fog piped into the room. It also means POSS is viable for Isolators, RABS, Gloveboxes, Passboxes and Freeze-Dryers, where until now only VHP/HPV were available options. POSS can also be integrated into the PLC Control systems of such equipment or BMS in cleanrooms, giving an added dimension in integration as needed.

POSS has a much lower capital, maintenance and other costs compared to VHP/HVP Systems

POSS is substantially cheaper to acquire than a comparative sized VHP/HVP system due to not needing any additional process steps like air pre-conditioning or catalytic degradation and also no need for external air movement items like fans etc. It is also less dependant on complex electronic processing with it’s inherent frailty and need for expensive PM and spares etc. Typically, POSS will costs about 40-50% of a comparable VHP/HVP system. POSS is a highly robust piece of equipment with minimal PM needs and extremely good reliability so maintenance costs are minimal, and breakdowns very infrequent. Due to its highly intuitive programming and ease of use the requirements for Operator training are minimal and result in less training and validation costs in use. Maintenance is also largely by plug & play replacement modular parts, so again, this is a simple process possible achievable by the customer or Distributor, as needed, without return of the unit to the factory.
